3-Phase Power
Why use 3-phase power instead of single-phase power?  How will it affect my equipment?

Why Use a Phase Converter?
Is a phase converter more economical than purchasing 3-phase power from utility companies?  Will my equipment operate more efficiently?

Building Your Own
3-Phase Converter

Is it difficult to build your own phase converter?  How can you be sure your converter will be a true, 3-phase converter?

Types of 3-Phase Converters:

Rotary Phase Converters
Provides a continuous source of three-phase power.  They can operate more than one piece of equipment and will run 35 years or more.  Rotary phase converters are true, 3-phase converters and provide true, balanced electricity.

Static Phase Converters
Produce a three-phase power source for only a few seconds during the startup of equipment.

Digital Phase Converters

Electronic and non-mechanical by nature, and can be very expensive.

Variable Frequency
Converters

VFDs are designed primarily to control the speed of AC motors.

CNC Phase Converters
These converters have power conditioning to produce lower harmonic distortion, and they are an excellent choice for running computer circuitry.

Can Single-Phase Power Operate Three-Phase Equipment Efficiently?

Using Single Phase Power can cause distortion that can damage machinery.Electrical power in today’s industrial marketplace is a very important concern.  Companies, and even residential operators, have many factors to consider.  Since most electrical power sources are single-phase electricity, the operation of three-phase equipment presents some very important issues such as:

  • Will three-phase equipment run efficiently on single-phase power?

  • Is it safe to use single-phase power loads?

  • Is it expensive to install three-phase power?

  • Can single phase power damage equipment?

Three-phase electrical power, by its very nature, is a smoother form of electricity than single-phase power.  Because of its three-phase circuitry, three-phase power produces a constant source of electrical current enabling equipment to operate more efficiently and quietly.  There is less audible noise vibration due to a continuous power input, which is less taxing to equipment.  Click onto Ace Phase Converters' Sound Level Comparison for information on noise vibration.

Unlike single-phase power, three-phase power produces a revolving magnetic field that allows machinery to operate to its full capacity.  Operating three-phase equipment with a three-phase power source will result in many years of quality service from your machinery.  Most companies cannot afford the expense of replacing valuable equipment, and if repairs are needed, finding repair depots can be a burden.

Single- phase power is for smaller applications such as lighting.Single-phase power is better used when smaller applications are required such as lighting and small heating units.  Most other applications require three-phase power sources

for electrical power requirements.  Using single-phase power to operate three-phase equipment can cause distortion that can damage machinery permanently.

Now that the importance of three-phase power has been established, the expense of installation becomes another large issue.  Obtaining power from local utility companies can be a great expense.  Many times, especially in rural areas, the cost of getting three-phase power from utility companies is extremely high, $20,000 to $50,000 per mile.  Most companies and residential consumers cannot afford this exuberant cost.  Due to the cost of gas and other natural resources, larger businesses are also altering their budgets to save on operating expense.  However, there is a more economical answer for three-phase power!

Installing 3-phase power from utility companies can be expensive, costing up to $50,000.Because of the demand for more efficient power when operating industrial equipment, three-phase converters have become a very popular solution.  A true, three-phase converter can provide three-phase electrical power from a single-phase power source, and phase converters are very simple to install.  They provide the power load needed to operate equipment safely and to its optimal capacities.  Using the correct power loads to run your applications will give your equipment many years of longevity, and there is not the worry of production downtime.  There are many different kinds and types of three-phase converters.  Please refer to all the articles on our 3-Phase Converter Website for detailed information before purchasing your converter.
