3-Phase Power
Why use 3-phase power instead of single-phase power?  How will it affect my equipment?

Why Use a Phase Converter?
Is a phase converter more economical than purchasing 3-phase power from utility companies?  Will my equipment operate more efficiently?

Building Your Own
3-Phase Converter

Is it difficult to build your own phase converter?  How can you be sure your converter will be a true, 3-phase converter?

Types of 3-Phase Converters:

Rotary Phase Converters
Provides a continuous source of three-phase power.  They can operate more than one piece of equipment and will run 35 years or more.  Rotary phase converters are true, 3-phase converters and provide true, balanced electricity.

Static Phase Converters
Produce a three-phase power source for only a few seconds during the startup of equipment.

Digital Phase Converters

Electronic and non-mechanical by nature, and can be very expensive.

Variable Frequency
Converters

VFDs are designed primarily to control the speed of AC motors.

CNC Phase Converters
These converters have power conditioning to produce lower harmonic distortion, and they are an excellent choice for running computer circuitry.

Digital Phase Converters

Digital phase converters are operated by microprocessors.Digital phase converters are a new concept in three-phase power.  They are purely electronic and non-mechanical in nature, and they can be expensive.  They utilize proprietary software in a powerful microprocessor to control solid state power switching components.  The software monitors the converter to produce three-phase power.  Because of this new concept for three-phase power, it can be very difficult to find a repair depot if something should go array.

Digital phase converters use a rectifier and an inverter to create a single voltage.  This voltage is added to the two legs of a single-phase power source to create the third leg for three-phase power.  Digital phase converters cannot vary the frequency and motor speed because it generates only one leg of power that must match the voltage and frequency of the single-phase power supply.  If the digital phase converter is manufactured with high-quality phase converter materials and state-of-the-art technology, it can produce a balanced three-phase electrical power source.  Also, because of their electronic makeup, digital phase converters tend to be more quiet.

This new concept in 3-phase converters has its imperfections. Digital phase converters tend to take a sine wave and chop it up, which results in a somewhat choppy synthesized three-phase sine wave.  They tend to have more harmonic distortion than other types of phase converters.  Also, power factor correction isn’t always reliable.

Digital phase converters are very sensitive in nature due to its new technology, and depending on them for heavy three-phase power loads probably isn’t a good idea.  Due to their sensitivity, these types of 3-phase converters can experience equipment burnout by power surges from power imbalances or lightning strikes.  Their lifespan of operation can be shorter than that of a rotary phase converter because of their delicate electronic makeup.

Many manufacturers advertise that digital phase converters are the solution to all job applications.  However, beware of advertisements.

Digital phase converters are manufactured with new technology that hasn’t always proved to produce converters that are of high quality.  As mentioned earlier, because of the delicate nature of digital technology, finding a repair depot or technical support can be very difficult.  Not getting prompt technical support or necessary repairs would cause considerable downtime during production, which would result in lost revenue.

In spite of the latest marketing claims that digital phase converters are the three-phase power solution of today’s power demands, don’t be fooled.  True, rotary phase converters operate almost any application, and they have longevity for up to 30 years and more.  This is why it is so Digital Phase Converters use a rectifier and an inverter to create a single voltage.important to seek out a very reputable manufacturer, such as Ace Phase Converters.  When you work with a very  experienced  manufacturer who has an educated and professional engineering staff, you can be assured that you will have the best possible assistance when selecting your phase converter.  There are many things to consider when purchasing a 3-phase converter that is going to be responsible for the operation of your valuable equipment.  By selecting a 3-phase converter that is manufactured with high-quality materials and is the correct type for your job requirements, you’ll come out way ahead.  Businesses no longer can afford not to have the three-phase power needed to run their applications, and selecting a quality converter will eliminate costly repairs or production downtime!
